Africa is a vibrant continent that has become increasingly important in global economic and political dynamics, not in the least because of its natural richness, its quickly growing and young population, and the increasingly vocal position taken by African leaders. In this course we will discuss Africa’s shifting position in the world by looking at Africa’s changing global connections from a number of thematic angles, such as migration, security, economic connections, geopolitics, diplomacy. Specific attention will be paid to historical roots of current relationships, the diversity of Africa’s global partners, and how the intensity and character of global connections may vary between African regions and localities, and between categories of the African population. The aim is to provide the participants in the course with knowledge and insights that will enable them to critically assess current debates and developments concerning Africa in the world, including development challenges, the promises and pitfalls of partnerships, and the role of Africa(ns) in coshaping the world order of the future.
